Prospecting

Prospecting is the process of exploring possible breeding sites before breeding there. The study did not directly estimate whether gulls prospected for more than one year before recruiting. Prior presence at the colony was nearly required before Audouin's gulls recruited into breeding. Prospecting can reduce dispersal risk by helping individuals gather information about patch quality. Prospecting was interpreted as a key behavioral step toward first reproduction, not merely an associated behavior.
