Inadequate communication limited relationships between women and care providers. Limited interaction reduced providers’ ability to identify women’s needs during labour. Language barriers affected Tamil and Muslim mothers who did not understand Sinhala or English. Providers recognized reliance on gestures and signs as unfair to mothers and a weakness in language preparedness. Some providers did not speak to mothers until delivery because they were busy or missed the opportunity.
