Emotional functioning changed significantly in Mauro et al., but the timing of the change was unclear. Some participants concealed their diagnosis or treatment side effects from people around them. Stigma caused some participants to avoid close relationships. Dual stigma around HIV and anal cancer may reduce disclosure, participation in research, and intervention relevance. Most respondents with anal cancer needed LGBTQ+-specific mental health resources, but fewer than half received them.
