The synthesis used Thomas and Harden’s thematic synthesis method. The review assessed methodological limitations with CASP and confidence with GRADE-CERQual. Searches were conducted in October 2021, May 2023 and February 2025 without language, geography or publication-date restrictions. The review included qualitative studies and mixed-methods studies with qualitative components. The included evidence base comprised 11 papers across 14 trials and 105 trial non-retainers.
