The completeness of debridement cannot currently be measured reliably during surgery. Standard intraoperative care included complete debridement of the effective joint space, including contaminated bone, until healthy bleeding tissue was reached. Successful treatment of knee PJI depends heavily on radical surgical debridement down to healthy bleeding tissue. Radical debridement, synovectomy, and irrigation are recommended for devitalised, infected, or potentially infected tissues to reduce infectious burden.
