Super-refractory status epilepticus is defined as status epilepticus lasting more than 24 hours despite anesthetic treatment. About 10–40% of pediatric status epilepticus cases progress to refractory status epilepticus despite first- and second-line therapy. Severe refractory forms of status epilepticus increase risks of systemic complications, prolonged ICU stays, and poor neurological prognosis. Continuous anesthetic infusions can be necessary but introduce risks including hypotension, respiratory depression, immunosuppression, and nosocomial infections.
