Research provenance is critical to integrity, quality appraisal, impact evaluation, and trust. Persistent identifiers make research easier to find, authenticate, and curate because they are machine readable, searchable, and integrable across systems. ORCID iDs reduce ambiguity among authors with similar names and unify publication records for authors who changed names. Persistent identifiers provide durable references to digital objects. Metadata provide proof of provenance in digital publishing. The immediate call is to include ORCID iDs for company authors and improve organisation and grant identifier use among authors, contributors, and funders.
