The complex histories of residential schools and intergenerational trauma are difficult to capture adequately with a single survey question. Indigenous Advisory Committee members had expected the associations for sense of belonging and residential school attendance to be stronger and clearer than the data showed. Personal attendance at residential school was associated with a 38% higher likelihood of pain-related disability compared with those with no direct or familial residential school experience.
