Medication decisions involved weighing side effects against the risk of remaining untreated rather than simple support or opposition to medication. Risk was central to participants' understanding of medication decisions. Participants reported concerns about weight gain, sedation, emotional dulling, bodily effects, interactions, and destabilisation after medication changes. Many participants considered medication worthwhile if it reduced severe distress, instability, or safety risks despite possible adverse effects. Some participants believed clinicians prescribed medication because patients were perceived as risky, especially around self-harm or crisis.
