No prior study had specifically examined undernutrition prevalence and its associated factors in riverbank erosion areas of Bangladesh before this study. Between 1970 and 2000, the Padma and Jamuna rivers eroded approximately 180,000 hectares and displaced nearly 200,000 people. Riverbank erosion directly undermines food and nutrition security by destroying agricultural land and livelihoods. The total annual monetary loss from riverbank erosion in Bangladesh is estimated at approximately US$500 million.
