SPECS was established because no prior population-based cohort had examined NCDs in northeastern Iran or among the Khorasan ethnic group. SPECS aims to clarify NCD determinants in a region with distinctive environmental, social and cultural features. SPECS is intended to capture how regional geography, culture, social conditions, environmental exposure and lifestyle patterns influence disease development.
