A squat is contrasted with the deadlift because it needs more sacral counternutation and downward center-of-mass displacement. Body-structure tendencies related to sacral orientation are presented as general trends rather than universal rules. A deadlift requires the sacrum to nutate so the hips can move posteriorly. Hip internal rotation demand increases when sacral nutation and posterior hip displacement orient the acetabulum more anteriorly. Lack of hip internal rotation can lead to insufficient posterior hip movement and lumbar flexion compensation.
