Cognitive impairment reduces the ability of older patients to manage medication safely and independently. Unsafe medication management in cognitive impairment can lead to unintentional non-adherence and medication errors. Dementia and lower MMSE scores are associated with reduced ability to open medication containers or operate multidose inhalers correctly.
