Salutogenesis contrasts with a pathogenic approach by focusing on resources that help people manage stressors and move towards health and well-being. Salutogenesis was originally conceptualised by Antonovsky and views health and disease as a continuum rather than a binary state. The central concept of salutogenesis is sense of coherence, comprising three components. Generalised resistance resources, spanning physical, biochemical, cognitive, emotional and sociocultural characteristics, help develop sense of coherence. Salutogenesis is used in this review because it may reveal how people exposed to childhood trauma move towards well-being, rather than only documenting risk or disorder.
