Most survey respondents reported at least one barrier to bowel screening. Not knowing how to complete the kit and forgetting to complete it were the most common reported barriers. Some participants had low awareness or limited understanding of the bowel screening programme and FIT kit before CFAK. Emotional discomfort, embarrassment, avoidance, and fear of a positive result were important barriers to screening. Negative experiences with the older faecal occult blood test discouraged some people from engaging with later bowel screening kits.
