Naming the recurring unhelpful pattern and revoking its authority made the behavior easier to challenge in the moment. When a clinician actively engaged with problem-solving and tried to fulfil the patient's stated needs, this was experienced as genuinely supportive. Participants with stronger initial self-management profiles appeared more responsive to education. Higher educational attainment has been positively associated with perceived effectiveness of self-management among patients with advanced cancer. Self-management research findings from chronic diseases cannot be directly transferred to advanced cancer because patients face rapid decline, changing priorities, and difficult trade-offs between survival and quality of life. Self-management skill levels in this cancer population were higher than those reported for patients with mild COPD, with higher educational attainment offered as a possible explanation. Participants with advanced cancer showed relatively high self-management skill levels, with mean scores close to 3 on a 1–4 scale.
