Prescribing often occurred when psychological therapy or specialist support was hard to access. High prescribing rates may reflect structural problems rather than only individual prescribing preference. Participants described waiting lists, care gaps, rigid eligibility criteria, and limited service availability. Stigma and dismissive responses from services were reported as barriers in emergency and mental health settings. When psychological support was unavailable, medication could become the only immediate offer.
