Capillary leak syndrome is a major danger of hantavirus infection. Leaky blood vessels can cause fluid to accumulate in tissues and organs. Fluid buildup in the lungs can produce severe respiratory compromise. Hantavirus patients can worsen rapidly from nonspecific symptoms to shock and respiratory failure requiring intensive care.
