Accurate sex and gender terminology did not improve in newer publications. Sex was treated as a biological attribute, while gender was treated as a social construct involving identities, roles, relations, and norms. Most randomized trials reported sex and/or gender, but only a small minority used the terms accurately. No included trials reported non-binary participant characteristics. The secondary analysis assessed whether randomized trials of patient decision aids reported sex and gender accurately.
