Shortness of Breath

The patient achieved progressive independence from oxygen support after sunlight therapy was introduced. Shortness of breath is most frequently attributed to structural or inflammatory lung conditions including asthma, COPD, pneumonia, and tuberculosis. A subset of dyspnea cases — pseudo-dyspnea — worsens at rest and improves with exercise, distinguishing it from true respiratory disease. Acidosis is the more direct and common pH-related cause of air hunger compared to alkalosis. Everyone experiences breathlessness during intense physical activity, but excessive breathlessness relative to companions indicates reduced lung capacity. Tracheal obstruction can be misidentified as asthma because the dyspnea superficially resembles bronchospasm and prompts rescue-inhaler use. Shortness of breath is not always caused by a lung or heart problem. A 1-unit change on the 0-10 numerical rating scale is considered the minimal clinically important difference for breathlessness. Morphine preparations are sometimes used for breathlessness in palliative care, but evidence for consistent subjective measurable benefit is lacking.
