The study used an individual-based spatial simulation with two initially identical competing species. Some results depended on stochastic fluctuations and system size. Each site had capacity for one surviving individual after competition. Higher fitness raised but did not guarantee an individual's probability of surviving local competition. The lattice used periodic boundary conditions to avoid edge effects. The model was implemented in NetLogo.
