Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type III

SMA type III usually begins after 18 months of age, and most affected children achieve independent walking. Spinal muscular atrophy is caused by biallelic inactivation of the SMN1 gene and leads to SMN protein deficiency. About half of people with SMA type III lose independent ambulation by their second decade of life.
