Squalene

Squalene is the foundational raw material at the upstream start of the vitamin D synthesis pathway. Squalene is a precursor to cholesterol and steroid hormones, and since vitamin D derives from cholesterol, squalene is the ultimate upstream building block. Both plants and animals produce squalene.
