Cultural respect appeared to help sustain motivation even when clinical care was difficult. Sri Lankan nursing students showed broadly positive attitudes toward caring for older people compared with some international studies reporting negative attitudes. Sri Lanka's family caregiving traditions and respect for older people were hypothesised to support more positive student attitudes. The study attributed students' positive orientations to intergenerational family structures, filial caregiving, and respect for elders.
