Formal inter-rater reliability for the SSA was not quantified in this study, even though assessors received standardised training and disagreements were arbitrated. The SSA was first introduced in 1996 and is widely used internationally. The SSA total score ranges from 18 to 46 points and contains three components: assessment of consciousness and trunk control, a 5 mL drinking test, and a 60 mL drinking test. Swallowing function was assessed at six time points: 2, 4, 6, 8, 24, and 48 hours after extubation.
