Light and dark cycles are the single most powerful input to the suprachiasmatic nucleus. All sleep and wake cycles are governed by the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in the brain. The SCN is extremely small — approximately one-quarter of one millimeter squared — and exists as a pair. Exercise is the second most powerful stimulus for the SCN after light, reinforcing circadian timing.
