Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Systems

Parasympathetic activation allows digestion, immune function, and healing processes to resume. Sympathetic and parasympathetic activity operate reciprocally, with high sympathetic activation suppressing parasympathetic activity. The sympathetic system takes priority during genuine threats because immediate survival is the primary physiological need. The frontal lobe can suppress ongoing sympathetic activation after evaluating that a threat has passed.
