Studies have detected traces of pharmaceutical drugs in municipal water supplies. Chlorine is intentionally added to municipal water as a disinfectant and may have health effects. Tap water contains contaminants including chlorine, heavy metals, pharmaceutical residues, benzene, and glyphosate. City tap water contains disinfecting chemicals that are estrogenic and have broad systemic effects on skin, the brain, and other organs. Benzene, a known carcinogen, has been found in some water supplies. Investigations of municipal water have revealed particulate contamination from personal care products and hygiene items. Glyphosate, a pesticide linked to GMO agriculture, has been found in water supplies. At minimum, a quality filter is recommended for tap water to reduce estrogenic chemicals and disinfection byproducts.
