In a study of people over age 50, tart cherry consumption yielded an average of 84 additional minutes of sleep. The studied dosage of tart cherry is 1 oz of juice before bed or whole cherries consumed twice daily. Two separate studies have examined tart cherry consumption for sleep, one using juice and one using whole cherries. Tart cherries contain tryptophan, an amino acid that converts to serotonin and then to melatonin. Tart cherries are one of the few foods that directly contain melatonin.
