A one-repetition-maximum bench press is presented as a context where a large zone of apposition may not be ideal. A minimized zone of apposition may be a short-term stress adaptation rather than an immediate error. Powerlifters may use a large spinal arch because it shortens bar path and improves leg drive. Focused breaths can restore zone of apposition after stress, exertion, or task demands. During competitive sport, conscious management of rib cage position can interfere with the sport task. The appropriate amount of zone of apposition depends on the task. High-output, high-stress, and sport-specific situations may usefully reduce the zone of apposition.
