The article presents tDCS followed by TMS as a proposed strategy for improving efficacy beyond either technique alone. tDCS alters neuronal resting membrane potential and facilitates cortical responsiveness without directly producing action potentials. TMS modulates cortical excitability and can induce synaptic and non-synaptic changes. Administering tDCS immediately before TMS is intended to precondition the cortex and amplify TMS effects.
