Children heal rapidly because they have exceptional circulation and no accumulated injuries. Muscles can be pumped easily, but tendons require sustained circulatory stimulus because of their dramatically lower baseline blood flow. Aging reduces all three factors that enable healing: strength, flexibility, and circulation to connective tissue. Eccentric training can begin with a very small range of motion and be progressively increased, enabling safe tendon rehabilitation. Eccentric exercise is widely used in physical therapy, chiropractic care, and post-surgical rehabilitation for tendon and ligament injuries. Eccentric training is applicable to shoulder tendon damage and Achilles tendon tears.
