Prior evidence indicates that TIMP-1 levels are elevated in chronic Chagas heart disease. TIMP-1 regulates matrix metalloproteinases involved in extracellular matrix degradation. Overexpression of TIMP-1 is associated with increased collagen deposition and progression of myocardial fibrosis. The trial evaluates whether plasma TIMP-1 is associated with myocardial fibrosis and disease progression in chronic Chagas cardiomyopathy. TIMP-1 is being investigated as a non-invasive scalable biomarker that could complement CMR or serve as a pragmatic surrogate where CMR access is limited.
