The herbal tradition draws from the Treatise on Cold Damaged Disease, written in 220 AD, one of the oldest medical textbooks in China. Much of the foundational research on herbal coronavirus treatments was carried out in China using traditional Chinese herbs. Chinese medicine has classical texts dating back about 2,500 years.
