Transport reactions in the model use Mass Action Law kinetics. Ceramide, sphingomyelin, and glycosphingolipids are modeled as membrane-restricted species that move through lipid-transfer proteins or vesicles. Sphingosine, S1P, and C1P are treated as more hydrophilic species able to diffuse into cytosol or out of the outer membrane. S1P and complex sphingolipids require transporters or flippases for transmembrane movement.
