Trial Design Acceptability

Different usual-care contexts across England and Wales made a consistent control condition difficult to define. Individual-level randomisation was chosen to avoid contamination and because cluster randomisation would need larger sample sizes. Equipoise was challenged because the intervention had already been operating and caseworkers believed it was effective. Caseworkers viewed randomisation as unethical because they saw control allocation as denying vulnerable people support.
