The prevalence of undiagnosed hypertension found in this study was lower than that reported in several comparable rural African and Asian settings. Among previously diagnosed participants, only 20.8% were taking antihypertensive medication and only 38.5% were in regular follow-up. Female sex, older age, combined alcohol and khat use, low salt-risk awareness, and no prior blood pressure measurement were significantly associated with undiagnosed hypertension in the adjusted model. Never having had blood pressure measured was the strongest independent risk factor for undiagnosed hypertension, with an adjusted odds ratio of 5.60.
