In the placebo group, physical activity and sedentary images appeared equally in approach and avoidance formats. In the intervention group, 90% of physical activity images appeared in the approach format and 90% of sedentary images appeared in the avoidance format. A tablet button press caused virtual forward or backward movement through the image. Logistical constraints changed the protocol from 12 sessions over three weeks to 12 sessions over six weeks. The intervention used the Visual Approach/Avoidance by the Self Task delivered on touchscreen tablets under research assistant supervision.
