Approximately 2 billion people worldwide are deficient in vitamin D3. Darker skin requires significantly more sun exposure to produce the same amount of vitamin D3 as lighter skin. Liver dysfunction, missing gallbladder, or insufficient bile production impairs vitamin D absorption because it is a fat-soluble vitamin dependent on bile. Geographic distance from the equator limits UV radiation exposure, reducing the skin's ability to produce sufficient vitamin D. The body progressively loses the ability to absorb vitamin D3 as it ages. It is very difficult to meet even basic vitamin D RDAs through diet alone.
