The drill is designed to help the quadriceps and hamstrings become active. Muscles that are difficult to voluntarily activate tend to gain hypertrophy and strength less readily. Robust voluntary muscle activation is reflected by intense voluntary contraction of a muscle. A small amount of hamstring activation is expected during the hip curl. Voluntary activation can occur without external weight or resistance. Muscles with weak voluntary activation tend to respond more slowly to training stimuli.
