Both high and low prescriber groups overestimate VTE incidence relative to the actual observed rate of approximately 1%. Just over half of both prescriber groups believed that more than 5% of untreated patients would develop VTE during hospitalization. Both prescriber groups were similarly confident in their independent clinical risk assessment, yet that confidence appears miscalibrated to actual event rates. Because both prescriber groups similarly overestimate VTE risk, epidemiological beliefs alone do not explain the differences in prescribing rates.
